The lovely Elakala Falls are a series of four waterfalls of Shays Run as it descends into the Blackwater Canyon in West Virginia. They’re within Blackwater Falls State Park and are reasonably popular among photographers, with the ease of access for the first waterfall, and the relatively low traffic of the other waterfalls in the series.

The falls is made up of three main plunges with only the top one accessible with relative ease. In my opinion, Elakala Falls is one of the most picturesque falls in our region. It is the first of four waterfalls on Shays Run in Tucker County within Blackwater Falls State Park. This waterfall is very easy to access, as there is a well-maintained trail to view the falls from below, as well as a very nice walkway to view from above. 2016-07-09 The Elakala Falls are quite close, so you could do a very short trip to view the falls and then back. The falls are fed by Shay Run, and like all the streams and rivers of the area, feature "black" water due to high levels of tannins.
